Hello:

Can you tell me if there has been any comparative research done on how mutual funds perform by how they are paid for, such as front load or back load?

Why a Mutual fund? Why pay any load at all? Why not find an investment that operates just like a Mutual Fund (pooled investment dollars) that is well managed and has a significant history of success that does not charge fees or milk down the funds assets to pay hidden fees at the expense of your potential returns?

Pooled investments don't incur any fees? Really? Are you sure about that? I'd strongly suggest you double check your info.

Yes there is much research on mutual funds.

On average the funds return approximately the appropriate index minus fees.

Some do better, some do a worse, the agreement is that there is no reliable way to predict which fund will perform better than the index.

Since it is unlikely that you will buy a mutual fund that will outperform the index, many advocate simply buying am index fund with a low fee. (eg ETF or TD efund).

I am not aware of ANY reputable research that demonstrates superior returns on front or back load funds over no-load funds.
